Case Study:
T2 Cairns Airport, Australia
2024

Project Overview

In 2023, Ansir was tasked with designing and implementing the outbound baggage handling system to comply with new government regulations, incorporating standard 3 compliant screening machines and automatic tag readers (ATRs) to reconcile bag tags and sort bags to their allocated make-up positions. Modifications included updates to conveyor lines, control systems, and the addition of a third make-up carousel with a feedline, structural walkways, and access ladders to enhance system flexibility and resilience. The Level 3 screening room was reconfigured to automate the re-input of cleared bags, eliminating manual handling, and the entire system underwent a full SCADA upgrade for improved performance and monitoring.

Challenges

Working at a brownfield airport site presents unique challenges due to pre-existing infrastructure, environmental considerations, and operational constraints. Throughout construction, we prioritise operational continuity and safety, minimising disruption to airport activities while adhering to strict safety and security regulations. Our team efficiently navigates the needs of multiple stakeholders and works within the limited space of an operational airport, ensuring smooth collaboration. Additionally, we manage the movement of materials and equipment with precision, avoiding disruptions and meeting tight timelines to minimise downtime.

Solution

Addressing the challenges of working on a brownfield airport site requires strategic planning, effective stakeholder coordination, and innovative, tailored solutions. From the outset, we conduct a thorough assessment of existing asset conditions and potential operational challenges to inform a comprehensive project quality and management plan. Frequent stakeholder meetings ensure transparency and balance the interests of all parties, while construction is scheduled during off-peak hours wherever possible to minimise disruption to airport operations. Additionally, comprehensive testing is carried out at every stage to ensure the robustness and reliability of all components.

Results

The Cairns T2 project was delivered on time and within budget, resulting in a robust, future-proof baggage handling system. Processing times have been significantly reduced, enhancing operational efficiency and improving passenger satisfaction. Ansir’s solution sets a new standard for excellence in regional airports across Australia.
